the sunflower chronicles – phase 5

Phase 5 is the harvesting of the seeds.  The birds love to eat sunflower seeds.  Around the time all the pedals have fallen off the sunflower blooms, you will notice birds starting to pluck the seeds out of the center of the heads of the sunflower plants.  I like to chop a few of the heads off and put them on my balcony for the birds.  Finches, especially the Gold variety, along with chickadees, really enjoy the seeds.  This is also the time to gather and save a few seeds for the process to start over next year.
